Chapter 3: Minor Characters

  • Owl Eyes- He's found in drunk in Gatsby's library admiring all the books.  "Absolutely real-have pages and everything.  I thought they'd be nice durable cardboard..." p. 50 He's materialistic and he later crashes a car with someone else driving the car.  Nick thinks that he did but he hasn't.  He's a bad drinker and he says he knows "very little about driving-next to nothing..." p. 59 Besides that I don't really know his significance in the story yet.  I looked it up on shmoop.com and it says to take note of it.  I'm guessing he will be coming up later in the story as well.
  • I didn't see any of the other minor characters in this chapter.  Please tell me if you have any insight on Owl Eyes' character in this chapter, because I don't see anything.

Maybe Owl Eyes shows the viewpoint of the general population or even the views of the Gatsby's guests? I'm not sure, but I think the fact that he expects Gatsby's books to be cardboard and blank shows how fake everyone expects Gatsby and the rich (new money) to be.

I think Gatsby is just as fake though, because none of the books were actually read. The pages were still sticking together in one of the books he took out. But I like the viewpoint idea. It makes sense.

I agree with Amy. I think Owl Eyes is used to show the contrast between new money and old money. But other than that I can't really see his purpose in the story so far.

I agree with Amy too to some extent. I think he was put in to show the shallow-ness of some of the regular attendees of Gatsby's parties. He shows how aesthetic, how materialistic people are in that time.

I agree. No other minor characters. But, I like agree about what you said about Owl Eyes. But I sort of agree with Jasmine when commenting on the fact that Gastby can also play the "phonney" card when associating him with the books.

Nice job Jasmine.

Owl Eyes sees things the way they are - not things just the way they appear to be. He has no expectations of Gatsby but at least he is thinking about Gatsby, unlike the people who just mindlessly show up at his parties.
